STYLE GURU STYLE: Black on Black

Layering is one my favorite part of the colder months because you get to put so many pieces to work in one look. Alexandre Vauthier’s spring 2016 Couture line helped inspire my outfit. I love the cape-inspired looks seen throughout, and the heavy black on black layers creating really cohesive styles.

The spring runways trends seem to approach quickly in the midst of winter here on the East Coast. The freezing winter temperatures have a way of swallowing up the colorful clothes in my closet, and black seems to be more agreeable on colder days. This designers’ looks helped me hone in on a more realistic style of layering some of those classic pieces we all have in the closet.

Having a great pair of ripped black jeans is everything right now. This is a good building block for creating lots of looks. I added a black knit sweater, another essential for the winter wardrobe. To top it off, I layered with a denim jacket. I was hoping to create an illusion of the cape look for less. I accessorized with a detailed buckle bootie, with subtle metallic shades to offset the darkness, and pull from Vauthier’s feminine edge.

Looking at a collection from a more general perspective can help you take more realistic piece from your wardrobe, like a jean jacket, and translate it into a more cohesive, stylish ensemble. I felt more comfortable wearing jackets draped over my shoulders after seeing its prominence on the runway this season.
