STYLE GURU STYLE: Blackened Layers

As December comes to an end and January begins, the weather is slowly getting chillier. Walking to class in the windy weather changes a lot of students’ desire to dress in anything other than multiple layers of sweatpants and puffy jackets. But if one is going to layer, then why not layer in style? Layering is very simple if you know how to do it right. I remember when I was younger my parents would layer me up before I’d run wild into the cold air. I thought layers were the worst thing to ever happen. My arms would stick straight out, and my usual walking turned to waddling. Over the years, I’d say I have mastered the art of layering. The secret is to start with thin pieces and work your way to the thicker pieces.

This outfit has different pieces that come together to form a finished piece. I paired a long-sleeved turtleneck sweater with a comfy black cardigan. Depending on how cold it is, a thicker coat can be added to the top of this outfit. As you can see, these layers provide warmth without creating the unwanted bulkiness. I also wore black jeans with holes in the knees to give the outfit a grungy feel. I added a few accessories like my black watch with a gold rim and my red shoulder bag (similar bag here). Finally, to complete the outfit I wore faux suede booties in black.

This winter, I plan to create many more layered looks and I hope you do the same.
