Not too long ago, we were all captivated by the cool hybrid winter jackets and sleek slip dresses that graced the catwalks in New York, London and Paris during the winter fashion months. But let’s not get too ahead of ourselves! After a long winter in Holland, my winter parka is just now going back into storage. Say goodbye to sweaters and boots, and let’s take a look all the way back to September of 2015 at the trends from the spring and summer 2016 runways (that is our current season, after all).
Spring and summer fashion months (although so long ago) brought a huge resurgence of denim in the form of fringy flares (thank you Chloe!), mini skirts and distressed high-rise skinnies. alice + olivia’s ready-to-wear collection was no exception to this spring denim trend. The collection features fresh desert floral, boho neutrals, fringe and splashes of hand embroidery. My favorite looks included the floral embroidered wide leg jeans paired with a denim button-up skirt and a frilly cold shoulder blouse tucked into a fringy patchwork denim skirt. This collection embodies a free-spirited, yet polished woman who loves a good pair of boho flares. alice + olivia truly nailed the desert goddess vibe (they even feature cacti in the background of their runway photos!) and I could not be more inspired.
I chose to take my own twist on the denim-on-denim trend that graced the runways of Alexander McQueen, Chloe and alice + olivia back in September. Unfortunately, Alexander McQueen’s exquisitely detailed jacket is way out of my college budget, so my denim pieces are thrifted. For my alice + olivia-inspired look, I paired a vintage Levi Brand Jean jacket with an Aztec printed crop top and raw hem button-up denim skirt. The jacket was raided from my mom’s closet (because denim gets better with age) and the skirt cut from a floor length Goodwill find.
