STYLE GURU STYLE: Boho Meets SoHo

I am obsessed with patterned pants, especially patterned smocked pants. I know some people (my younger sister) think they look like a pair of pajama pants, but I just love them. The bright colors, relaxed fit and intricate patterns make for an outfit that is both eye-catching and comfortable.

Apparently, I’m not the only one riding the bohemian bandwagon. In the fall 2015 report on Style.com, designers agreed that the ‘70s bohemian style, which dominated the market this past spring, is here to stay. Although both seasons drew inspiration from the same era, the fall runways sported a very different bohemian look than the spring. As I enjoy clever and catchy names, I have taken it upon myself to name this new trend. So get ready Fashionista/os, because “Boho meets SoHo” is sweeping the nation!

You might be wondering what “Boho meets SoHo” means, which is a reasonable question, as I just made the phrase up five minutes ago when generating the title for this article. Essentially, the fall bohemian look has an edgy, urban twist to it, making it quite different from the free and flowing spring style. Combining the street style of Manhattan with the era of “Flower Children” may seem like a recipe for disaster, but it works.

A look by Chloé, my inspiration for today’s look, is the perfect example of the boho style. The focal point of the outfit is the intricate, patterned bottoms that serve as the bohemian element. What Chloé and other designers have done to transition boho into the fall is to use a darker color palette.

The boho bottoms were paired with a black top. I opted for this simple black top with cutout detailing to create that edgy, SoHo vibe. I finished off the look with a pair of heels, which lengthen my legs and are a nice change from the usual sandals that are paired with smocked or harem pants.

Whether you are a bohemian skeptic or have a closet filled with Free People and Anthropologie, give “Boho meets SoHo” a try! Trust me, this is a trend worth testing.

Get My Look: 1. Patterned harem or smocked pants. 2. A black or dark top. 3. A killer pair of heels.
