STYLE GURU STYLE: Borrow From The Boys

Over the past few months, Banana Republic has undergone some serious rebranding. They have transitioned from a fading retail chain to a trend setting go-to. I have been a huge fan of #thenewBR and fell even further in love when I caught a glimpse of their spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection. More specifically, I was drawn to the men’s portion of the collection with its clean lines, crisp fabrics and fresh palette of whites, grays and rich denim. What better way to tackle a transition period than to go back to tried and true neutrals? I love the idea of borrowing from the boys to create the perfect laid back look that checks the boxes in both comfort and effortless style.

There is something powerful about a woman confidently wearing pieces that are quite the opposite of a feminine waist-defining dress. Don’t get me wrong, I love a great dress or skirt as much as the next gal but nothing says chic like a big crisp white button-down and a healthy dose of confidence and ease.

The boxy shape of the shirt contrasts nicely with a pair of cropped skinny jeans while the jean jacket, while slightly oversized as well, creates a visual waistline without being form fitting. Incorporating menswear is all about taking silhouettes that are ordinarily masculine and pairing them with pieces that create an inherently feminine look in the most subtle way.

I completed my look with understated accessories. My slim brown leather watch and vintage bracelet compliment the minimalist look and my white converse are the ultimate in casual footwear. While I love the look of menswear-inspired ensembles, a girl has to be able to carry all of her things. This oversized tan linen tote bag with gold hardware was the perfect addition.

Menswear doesn’t always have to equate to power suits or sports jerseys but rather can be much more subtle. Next time you go shopping don’t be afraid to mosey on over to the men’s section. You might be pleasantly surprised by what you find.

Get My Look: 1. Men’s crisp white button-down. 2. Gray cropped denim. 3. Slightly oversized jean jacket.
