STYLE GURU STYLE: Bringing Back the Button-Front

Although my decade of choice for fashion inspiration tends to be the ’90s, I can’t get Saint Laurent’s ’70s-inspired spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection out of my head. The whole collection is fun, colorful and, most importantly, super detailed. At first glance, the clothing looks straight out of a ’70s London night club, but a closer look reveals intricate beading and involved stitching. My personal favorites of the collection are the slinky (in such a good way) dresses with metallic flare and super short lengths and the skirts with funky floral patterns. The skirts of the collection were mini skirts for the most part, and many of them featured simple buttons down the front, which inspired my outfit in this post.

Branching out from my comfort zone of black and gray is something I find rather difficult, so it’s good to take it one step at a time. The bright reds, blues and greens of the collection were a bit much for my dark color-lovin’ eye, so I just stuck to the button-front skirt as inspiration. The floral pattern of the mini skirt stands out against the rest of the fairly plain outfit, and the maroon sweater was my way of further spicing up the look.

Thigh-high socks are a great winter staple, since they’re thicker than tights and a little more exciting than plain jeans. The socks paired well with the black booties to contribute to the look’s retro vibe. The turtleneck layered under the sweater was a sneaky way to add some warmth and it also happens to wonderfully fit the ’70s theme.

Get My Look: 1. A button-front mini skirt. 2. Thigh-high socks. 3. A cute retro turtleneck.
