STYLE GURU STYLE: Brooklyn Baby

After a short but sweet two and a half months in New York City I’ve learned many things. For example: the trains are always late, Dominique Ansel Bakery has the best croissants and the most magical place in all of NYC is the East River State Park in Williamsburg during a sunset. But chief among the many nuggets of wisdom that I’ve accumulated thus far is knowledge of the versatility of a bandana and a good pair of jeans. So it’s no surprise that Au Jour Le Jour’s 2016 resort collection, which heavily features those two fashion staples, is lending me major fashion inspiration this season.

Au Jour Le Jour is bright, kitschy and colorful—three things I am not. But there’s something about the illustrated hotel appliances, print mixing and ’70s silhouettes that draws me in. In trying to recreate the feel of Au Jour Le Jour’s latest batch of creations, I opted for a traditional bandana and loose boyfriend jeans. One thing I noticed in the city was the popularity of bandanas as neck accoutrements. The vibe of each bandana spans the style gamut from hip and edgy to preppy Ivy Leaguer and even youthful and innocent. I know only two ways to tie a bandana so paired with a loose white button-down I feel very chic and Parisian.

Another trend I noticed was nontraditional jean silhouettes. I’m still a skinny jean girl at heart but I’ve grown to appreciate looser fits. The thought of rocking flares terrifies me because it reminds me of my middle school years, but this low-rise pair is a happy medium. I kept the look modern with a pair of white tennis shoes and threw on a campy “Monster’s University” cap because why not? Now I’m all set to wander around Brooklyn, eat too much pad thai and wait for a picturesque sunset.

Get My Look: 1. Bandana. 2. Cool denim. 3. Kitschy accessories.
