I love fashion’s new obsession with camel. It’s muted, neutral tone works well with virtually every color and unlike other tame tones, camel doesn’t wash out my pale skin. The TSE pre-fall 2015 collection and the Karen Walker spring 2015 ready-to-wear show illustrated my two favorite ways to wear camel: coats and flat brim hats. The muted minimalism of the TSE collection highlighted the crisp elegance of this season’s midi coat, a trend that seemingly everyone is attracted to this winter as it’s both elegant and cozy warm. The flat brim hat has infiltrated blogger fashion in recent seasons, leading these chapeaux to dominate high street/street style fashion. However, these hats were rarely seen on the runway and seem to have erupted out of Pharell’s infamous Vivienne Westwood hat. Karen Walker kept the trend alive in her spring show, with floppy flat brims in pastel blues and beiges. They’re a stylish solution to any bad hair day and a simple way to transition your wardrobe both into and out of winter.
Taking a cue from TSE, this outfit focuses on muted tones and denim. I love that denim-on-denim continues to rise in popularity. Mixing denim washes with a light wash button-down and dark wash skinny jeans keeps this outfit casual, but put together. This camel coat is now a staple in my winter wardrobe. A cheap Forever 21 pickup, it proves quality doesn’t have to come at a high price. A midi cut hitting just above the knee, it’s the perfect cut for my 5’4” frame. The wool fabric adds insulation and texture and the giant pockets are simply a bonus for the pocket lover in all off us.
The Karen Walker-inspired pop of print comes from the double-sided blanket scarf. The all-consuming piece is as comfortable as your favorite blanket (and nearly as big) and ties in a classic and colorful element to the look. My two favorite aspects of this outfit come from head-to-toe. Another Karen Walker classic, the black and camel chain chapeau amps up any street style, adds urban dimension to complement any day-to-day look. Polishing off the outfit are a pair of brown leather Chelsea boots, a London staple. Thanks to Harry Styles and a slew of other stylish Brits, these beauties are finally gaining popularity in the States and I couldn’t be more excited. They’re a true quality piece, chic and comfortable, adding that classic worn leather texture to any outfit.
