When my mom came into my room over winter break and told me she didn’t want this cape coat, I immediately started thinking about how I could make this preppy trend edgier. In high school, my style definitely could have been described as preppy, but since then, I’ve adopted a much more edgy style.
A cape is obviously a statement piece, and I definitely wouldn’t recommend wearing one if it’s extremely cold out (your arms are basically exposed if you have to carry a book bag), but it is still wearable no matter what your style is.
I thought to myself, ok, what is the edgiest piece in your closet? Easy, my leather moto pants. These might seem a bit daring, but they fit like a glove and don’t squeak when you walk like some leather pants do. They’re also surprisingly easy to style because it’s basically like throwing on your favorite black jeans. Gray turtleneck sweaters are always my go-to in the winter because they are so warm and neutral, making them easy to pair with any kind of statement piece like the coat. My favorite part about the coat was the fact that although it wasn’t extremely practical, it did have a hood, which helped keep my newly straightened hair from getting wet in the snow. Lastly, I threw on my favorite pair of black suede booties and was ready to head out the door.
If you’re looking for a warm winter coat, a cape probably isn’t the way to go, but it is a great statement piece that’ll dress up any monochrome look!
