Seeing that I am a preppy girl at heart, it’s no surprise that I love a good gingham print. I have my fair share of the rainbow of J.Crew button-downs but was looking to incorporate this classic print in a more unexpected way.
Gingham remains a classic all-American print with a certain retro appeal. It took over runways last spring and got a major refresh. I was inspired by Joseph Altuzarra’s Spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection, which gave gingham a modern and light revival. The collection includes breezy shirt-dresses, high slits, tailored blazers and pencil skirts all decked in gingham in shades of blue, red, black and pale pink.
For my look, I drew inspiration from the gingham print on the pieces and the structured shapes of the blazers and pencil skirts. These shoes, with their lace-up straps, chunky heel and splashy yet classic print, are all the statement this outfit needs. Distressed boyfriend jeans give the outfit a more relaxed vibe, making it wearable for a casual day, even with heels. For my top, I went with a navy blouse with a clean cut. Because the jeans are a little less fitted and more relaxed, this top complements them without seeming too stiff. I drew this inspiration from the classic cuts in the Altuzarra collection. A little flair is added to this blouse with the scalloped opening in the back. The neutral color lets the shoes do the talking without being bland. I chose a simpler, more delicate take on a statement necklace to bring some sparkle to my look. My gold watch, pearl earrings and tortoise sunglasses finish the look.
Overall, this outfit was completely styled around these fabulous shoes. For a dressier occasion, it would be easy to swap out the jeans for a more structured pant or lose the jeans and top altogether and opt for a dress instead. Gingham is a versatile print that can be worn on any piece, which is the beauty of a classic and timeless pattern. You can wear gingham on a simple button down, all over an easy dress or maybe even on a pair of shoes. The possibilities are endless!
