STYLE GURU STYLE: Class Act

While it is no secret that the ’90s have taken to the street recently, it becomes a decision for a Fashionista to choose which ’90s style to pick. Grunge? Casual chic? Or perhaps leggings and exercise wear? Many of these styles can be found in anyone’s closet today; however, the type of ’90s fashion I chose to take on this week is sometimes forgotten: the school girl style. Typically classified in the ’90s as “glamour wear” and labeled the “schoolgirl” style, this portion of ’90s fashion is fun to bring back every once in a while. Despite its chic qualities, the schoolgirl look tends to be uncharted territory with today’s ’90s street styles that tend to be grungier.

Not everyone has lost sight of this small frame of ’90s fashion. This week, I was inspired by Comme des Garçons Comme des Garçons’ fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection, where designer Rei Kawakubo was inspired by the ’90s schoolgirl. From collared shirts with layered knits to black oxfords with white socks, Comme des Garçons Comme des Garçons chose to explore this forgotten arena in the fashion timeline.

For my look today, I chose garments out of the depths of my closet straight from my ’90s childhood wardrobe. Surprisingly, these dated garments were in wearable condition, and fit today’s ’90s revival movement. First, I paired a light yellow collared blouse with an old black knit jumper. Since I am a fan of classic pearls to finish any look, I layered a long pearl necklace to add a touch of class. On top of this, I found a purple felt hat which complemented my yellow blouse, and paired the look with neutral booties.

Initially, I was hesitant to drag out the ’90s jumper due to its dated style. After pairing the dress with the shirt and hat, however, it became a complete ’90s revival look that is totally right together. I would consider putting this look on again and wearing it casually because it is a modern street style look. Since this experience, this dress and hat will now be moving to the front of my closet for more daily exposure.

Get My Look: 1. A felt hat. 2. A sleeveless knit dress. 3. A strand of pearls.
