Anytime I hear the phrase, “Ugh, as if!”, I immediately conjure an image in my mind of the main character in the 1995 classic Clueless. The queen of prep, Cher Horowitz, is an iconic figure when it comes to the mod style uniquely reminiscent of the ’90s decade. I have this crystal clear image in my head of that yellow and black plaid number she sports during the movie’s opening scenes.
It was precisely that outfit of Cher’s that I thought of when I first laid eyes on this little shift dress in stores. With an easy shape and a bold checkered print, this piece is easily the closest I’ll come to living out my Clueless dreams. Although the movie was filmed an entire two decades ago, Cher’s iconic preppy style has experienced some major staying power. Both Altuzarra and Diane von Furstenberg used gingham and checkered patterns throughout their spring 2015 runway shows, proving that this mod style is just as ’90s as it is now.
I pulled the majority of my inspiration from this look and this look from the Diane von Furstenberg collection. The designer balanced the preppy vibes of the gingham with a simple pairing of sleek shoes and a matching handbag, giving the pattern a modern update for this season. The DVF show as a whole played with this print in structured separates and ethereal dresses, elevating checks from their typical connotation of a tablecloth or curtains. I wanted to emulate the same type of polished sophistication with this bold pattern, so I stuck with pairings so simple that Diane herself would be proud (if I do say so).
Get My Look: 1. A dress with a bold check print. 2. Your go-to pair of ankle boots or heeled sandals, depending on the occasion. 3. One stylish accessory, like this felt hat.
