After what felt like an eternity of sub-zero temperatures in Chicago, we were graced with a lovely 50-degree afternoon. The only downside to this random act of warm weather, is it gets everyone craving spring sunshine! Unfortunately, for us Mid-Westerners, we are not quite there yet. Before we get ahead of ourselves, always be prepared for the unexpected arctic winds that whip up in the city with thicker sweaters, a hat and gloves.
In the mean time, the best way to tackle the in-between weather is layering! I took some inspiration for my comfy outfit of the day from the gorgeous Barbara Bui fall ready-to-wear 2016 collection. The pieces in this collection range from casual to formal with a very edgy feel. Some of the pieces even incorporate bold plaids. “With its equal breakdown of statement sweaters, leather and fringed “rockabilly” tailoring, the collection fell neatly in line with Bui’s accessibly edgy sense of style while serving up a few surprises,” says Vogue. For my look, I pulled inspiration from her contrasting textures, thick layers and form fitting shapes.
I paired a black wool turtleneck with some distressed skinny-legged denim. My shoes are channeling Barbara Bui’s collection with their metallic zipper detailing on top of the black suede bootie. I love mixing and matching textures so long as I am working with neutrals. If you have not gotten on the turtleneck bandwagon, I highly suggest investing in 10. I dress them down with a pair of workout pants just to be sure I am extra cozy walking to class.
