It seems to me that class and showing skin are two things that work together rather than against each other today in the fashion world. A big trend in the spring 2015 ready-to-wear runway shows was cutouts. Every model’s midriff was peeking through cutouts in feminine and polished silhouettes. The recent runway show by Peter Som is the perfect example of this phenomenon.
Som’s spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection was a breath of fresh air with simple, classic pieces. However, what made Som’s collection really stand out was his use of unique ways to DIY your own cutouts. Every Fashionista/o knows the excitement of DIY since we do it every day while deciding on what to wear. Sometimes we will tie a belt a different way or wear that scarf as a head accessory. Whatever it is, it is fun and it is in our natural creative nature.
I recreated Som’s look, adding my own unique changes. I paired a pink A-line skirt with a white sleeveless button-up collared blouse to create the perfect spring and/or summer ensemble. Here is the twist: instead of completely buttoning my blouse up, I left the bottom two buttons undone. Then, I spread the bottom apart and tucked the blouse in. I layered a brown belt on top to keep the “cutout” secure and in place. Voila! You now have a DIY cutout summer ensemble. I finished my look with a pair of brown wedges, a Vera Bradley wrap bracelet, a classic Louis Vuitton tote and floral earrings.
