With every January comes a revitalised yearning for improvement. This goal assumes innumerable forms; however, a common cliché is generally shared—out with the old, and in with the new. This phrase has dictated my new year thus far. This month has been filled with fresh boots, turtlenecks, and earrings; a darker hair color; and the unexpected (in the context of this article) old sweater. Yes, gently worn sweaters are my latest fix, and they should be yours, too! Here is why.
Many clothing items demand a replacement. That pair of dilapidated sneakers you have had since high school probably have seen better days, and a replacement is swiftly in order. But sweaters are a completely different story. The reason is simple: one does not wear the sweater as often as other wardrobe necessities—shirts, shoes, and pants all call for more frequent use comparatively. The sweater is an item brought out when nature commands; it is a weather dependent accessory, if you will. What I am pointing to here, is that your old sweaters, your parents’ sweaters, and even sweaters purchased in a second-hand store usually stay in great condition for a long time. So save your money this new year and wear some gently worn sweaters to dress up or dress down your outfit of choice!
For the clothes pictured, I am wearing Steve Madden booties—yes, they are relatively new—an Urban Outfitters, spaghetti strap dress; some funky tights; and, you guessed it, an old sweater donated to me by my mother. In this particular ensemble, my knit sweater does wonders to change my otherwise fancy attire into something more casual—perfect for going to class or even to dinner. If you find yourself purging your closet this January, just remember: don’t throw out that sweater!
