There are two details that I can never seem to resist when perusing racks of clothing at a store: embellishment and embroidery. I love intricate sewed patterns that compose a color pallet atop otherwise plain pieces of clothing. On the embellishment spectrum—I look out for beading, fringe and tassels add soft dimension and movement to clothing. It’s no secret that I love white-toned, airy pieces that are light and breezy for summer.
With this in mind, it is no surprise that I have been inspired endlessly by Valentino’s spring 2015 ready-to-wear line. The collection is inspired by the Grand Tour, an educational trip that was taken in the 18th century by cultured young Europeans to explore the art and traditions of Italy. Italian motifs are evident throughout this collection from elaborate scarf prints to baroque-style eyelet floral details. Pastel hues are seen throughout the line that is comprised mostly of flowing dresses and tunics. Flat sandals made for travel are worn from look to look, alluding to the Grand Tour theme.
When contemplating the premise of Valentino’s show, I couldn’t help but relate it to my time studying abroad in Europe. I could relate to the need for comfortable footwear for long sight-seeing walks, along with simple and comfortable pieces that could last a full day of exploration in often hot weather. For this look, I pulled inspiration from the white tunic style eyelet dresses as seen in look 39, but with pastel blues and pinks featured in look 53. These shades can be seen in the Aztec-style embroidery and on my tunic dress. Birkenstocks were my footwear of choice for all-day comfort for summer activities. Tortoise shell sunglasses and simple nude and metallic envelope purse complete my look. Although I may not be gallivanting around Europe this summer, the same principles of practicality can apply for summer styles anywhere.
