Exploring the ins-and-outs of the corporate world this summer, I’ve been presented with the challenge of developing my business wardrobe—expressing my sense of style while sticking to company rules. A jeans and T-shirt kind of girl, acquiring some timeless formal pieces has been difficult but rewarding all the same.
Finding inspiration in the DKNY spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection, I wanted to emulate its simple color palette, tea-length skirts, and mesh material. Through this outfit I combined the classic work wear look with a contemporary twist.
All professionals should own at least one starched white button-down shirt. This one from Topshop takes prim and proper to a new level, with a cropped curved back. Appropriate for the workplace when tucked-in as pictured, this unique detail can be displayed with high-rise skinnies and heels for an edgier nighttime look. As seen on the runway on Vashtie Kola, a tea-length skirt is the perfect length for office attire. DKNY elevates this style by combining an over-the-knee silk slip with a longer mesh overlay. In a skirt like this I feel comfortable showing off my more current sense of style while complying with office rules.
Absolutely obsessed with fashion icon Caroline de Maigret, I paired my look with a Parisian rouge lipstick by Smashbox x Donald Robertson. As for accessories, I love to combine family heirlooms with modern pieces. An Elizabeth & James ring along with my grandmother’s cameo and insignia rings creates an eclectic look. Following the current choker necklace trend, this one by Jules Smith makes for a simple, subtle statement.
I definitely recommend a similar look for Fashionistas with a short stature and curvy body type like myself. A fit-and-flare style is always the way to go. In this outfit, I feel powerful and confident enough to embrace the parts of my body that I am not so in love with.
Get My Look: 1. A tea-length skirt. 2. Classic white button-down. 3. Choker necklace.
