STYLE GURU STYLE: Faux? Fur Real?

Fur in fashion is known as an ultimate luxury material…but would the animals agree? In the ever-present ethical debate on fur in fashion, if faux fur exists it makes sense for broke college students to choose it. For us, the option of buying fur is arguably non-existent, but let’s be honest…does faux fur really look that different than real?

Luckily, real fur isn’t the only thing trending on the runway in 2015/16. Sustainable designers, such as Stella McCartney, make faux fur chic this season, inspiring me to translate this trend to my own style. In her fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection, she debuts multiple incredible faux fur down coats. The statement these coats bring to the runway exists not only because of the initial drama, but also because no harm went into making them. Faux fur is popular now on coats, vests and more which allows for different styles to rock it anyway they’d like. Whether you’re hipster, prepster or punk rock, fur is a fabulous trend that is easy to translate to your own personal style.

As a lover of statement pieces, this faux fur coat was a must have. In this look, I adapted Stella McCartney’s sensational looks into my own. I pair my black and white faux fur jacket with dark jeans and maroon booties. I opted for minimal accessories because of the effortless drama the coat already adds to the outfit. I added a simple black turtleneck, wore my hair in a bun and added a classic red lip. This faux fur jacket gives an edgy twist to a basic black and white outfit.

“We finally found something that looks great and is consistent with our philosophy on luxury and cruelty free fashion,” says Stella McCartney. Well, thank you Stella for showing us that chic, on the runway and in our own lives, can be harmless.
