STYLE GURU STYLE: Feelin' Fall

With the oncoming drop in temperature that requires us to switch gears and drop the colors of our wardrobe, we need to embrace the warmer tones. It’s common to hear famous fashion bloggers say that they “transitioned” their closet to fall or winter. While I used to question how they had so many clothes, I realize now that it is a necessary task. Maybe you are like me and you don’t have enough for two closets, but the principle remains that your color scheme has to change with the seasons. If there are any investments to make, my top five are: a wool coat, a plaid scarf, a pair of sturdy yet cute rain boots, a go-to cable knit sweater and a fall skirt. To get the most out of these, try to stick to a color scheme, or aesthetic, that allows you to mix and match.

Not only do these items give you a solid foundation, but they transition perfectly to winter too. Layer some tights under your skirt, add a cute beanie or hat with your wool coat or get a cute pair of knee high cable knit socks to poke out of your boots. They are easy to layer and will last you through both seasons. Another plus (yes, there’s more) is that these items are classics. You can never say that a chic wool coat will go out of style or that rain boots will fade. And trust me, we all love plaid too much to ever just get over it.

When picking out these items, remember the colors. Sure, you can throw in pastel pink or bright teal if you want, but take advantage of changing up your style and trying warmer colors, such as a burnt orange or maroon/burgundy. Add a subtle pop of color by getting some hunter green boots. Not only can it go with anything, the color instantly adds another level of style to your look. Embrace the change in textures too! You can wear the flow breezy blouses most of the year to experiment with corduroy, velvet, different knits or, dare I say, cashmere. Layering these colors and textures adds to your look without putting in a ton of thought and effort, perfect for getting ready for school or work.

I am a bit biased, as fall is my absolute favorite time of the year, but this is also my favorite outfit to wear. My textured skirt contrasts with the soft knit of my sweater to add a bit more dimension to the eye. The rich color compliments the plaid of the scarf and matches effortlessly with a deep navy. In early fall, I paired it with taupe oxford flats, but now that it’s a bit colder I add slightly sheer tights with warm rain boots. If the temperature drops a bit more, I layer on my wool coat to walk to class and work and maybe add a chic beanie to keep my ears covered. Five essentials—unlimited options.
