“The reason a lot of people do not recognize opportunity is because it usually goes around wearing overalls looking like hard work,” Thomas A. Edison once declared. Although this quote was arguably said anonymously, the message none the less still stands firm.
For years, overalls have been recognized as work attire, but more and more they have been emerging as opportunities for fashion statements. Now, not only are denim overalls just for farmers and mechanics, but they are also now stylishly available for you and I alike. Get excited folks; it’s like the fashion of the ’90s never went away!
DKNY exemplified these fashions in its spring 2014 ready-to-wear collection (found at Style.com). The overalls worn by the women models were often too big in size to fit to their bodies. This purposeful oversizing gave a more relaxed and casual feel to the outfit.
Let’s take a magnifying glass to closer see how I took this trend from the catwalk straight to the streets, where the stray cats walk. I chose overalls that were not formfitting, giving a more relaxed and off-the-cuff look just like in DKNY’s collection. Overalls can be paired with a sports bra or bandeau if you want more skin to be exposed, or with a tank top or T-shirt underneath for more coverage. The latter is more modest and covered, yet still just as stylish of a look.
Get My Look: 1. Choose a nice pair of denim overalls as a solid foundation. 2. A top of some sort (bandeau or T-shirt), a nice. 3. A classic pair of Birkenstock sandals and of course a priceless smile for this fashion trend.
