One eye-catching trend that came out of Pre-Fall 2015 is grid print, formally known as ‘windowpane’. Sprinkled throughout the runways at Derek Lam, Christian Dior and Proenza Schouler, windowpane print is plaid’s grown-up cousin. This print is all about smooth, clean lines and a minimal palette. In bold black and white, the pattern acts as a basic that will effortlessly pair with all of your neutrals.
To work the print work in everyday life, I chose to opt out of the head to toe pairings seen on the runway. My statement piece of choice is a pair of grid printed trousers. I paired the pants with cold weather-appropriate layers in monochrome tones that don’t distract from the pattern. Keep the accessories simple, or contrast the neutral ensemble with a bright-colored purse. Try out a chunky turtleneck and relaxed motorcycle jacket for effortless weekend wear, or substitute a sleek blazer for an office-appropriate look. The pattern is versatile enough to transition from day to night in a pinch.
Recently, windowpane print has been popping up on everything from T-shirts to dresses. Snag an oversized button-up that will transition you from winter to spring. Or, go for a summery frock that you can rock with Doc Martens in the warmer months. If you’re not quite ready to commit, choose a patterned scarf to spice up an all-black ensemble. And if you want to make a bold statement, take some cues from Proenza and pair windowpane pieces in differing proportions and silhouettes. Whether you choose to keep it simple or go for the full effect, windowpane print has a place in every Fashionista’s wardrobe.
