STYLE GURU STYLE: Heat Rises

In recent national news, our First Lady, Michelle Obama was in Europe for a goodwill trip to promote two of her initiatives: Let Girls Learn and Let’s Move. Alongside the First Lady were her almost-college-aged daughters, Sasha and Malia Obama. These two lovely ladies sported coordinating dresses and jumpers, including a few of kate spade’s designs.

Not only is kate spade new york being represented on the President of the United States’ daughters, but this company also recently released a gorgeous ready-to-wear collection of spring outfits. In my opinion, any fashion that the Obama ladies represent is worth recreating for casual wear. While I’m not planning on touring London any time soon, there are plenty of summer events that I’d love to wear this style to!

kate spade new york’s collection included a lot of pieces colored green and white. White is incredibly in-season; it is a cool and clean color to wear in the heat of the summer. Another detail found in the collection a lot are cutouts and two-piece outfits that allow just a hint of skin to elongate the body and keep one cool.

I’m really making a case for maxi skirts here, everyone. In my opinion maxi skirts and dresses are the perfect lightweight summer piece. Here, I’m wearing a darker green one, which I love alongside the greenery that comes with beautiful summer weather.

Maxi skirts themselves are comfortable and versatile. I combined mine with an embroidered cream-colored crop top to combat the heat. I wore this outfit for a lunch date, but I can think of a few more events this summer that I would wear this too: a golf tournament, a grill out, a work party or a street festival would all be appropriate occasion s for this outfit.

Finally, I finished this already-simple outfit off with a pair of nude sandals and a lightweight piece of jewelry. My advice to Fashionistas is to stay away from heavy or clingy jewelry in the warm weather. Not only will metals heat up in the sun but, personally, I get tan lines from thick jewelry very easily so I avoid it all together during the sun-intense months.

My look was made very simply, which is how outfits should be when you’re trying to stay cool and look fashionable. I took a note from kate spade new york, the First Lady and her daughters to create this ensemble. Try looking out for what your style role models are wearing and what they’re doing to create a look that you’ll love!
