If I were to go on a journey where I could only bring the clothes on my back, this would be it. I’ve got my favorite boots, favorite pants, favorite shirt, favorite coat, favorite everything. There would be no need for bunches of suitcases filled with my entire life’s wardrobe, the weight would drive me insane. Freedom starts by getting rid of all the excessive objects you struggle with letting go.
I used to dress my outfits with piles of rings, a dozen necklaces, flashy shoes—no holding back. But recently, I realized that these garments and accessories were holding me back in the sense that I was too preoccupied with how I could put together the perfect ensemble. I was spending too much time planning how I would look for an experience rather than using the time to create more experiences. I suppose you could say I dressed for the destination. Now, I dress for the journey. At any given moment I’m ready to go, ready to explore, ready to fill my life with new memories as opposed to filling my closet with a new article of clothing I already own too many of.
However, this is not to say I no longer care about how I dress. Clothes that make me feel good are essential to my life. A ring on every finger used to make me feel good. Now, the comfort of a turtleneck and a pair of mom jeans makes me feel good. I enjoy the sensation of being taller in my flatform boots. My bucket bag allows me toss in every little thing I could need to bolt from place to place.
Styles change as quickly as our moods change. Perhaps one day I’ll be back to piling on jewelry and wearing flashy heels. It’s thrilling to not know how I’ll dress in the future, and it’s thrilling to not know where my favorite clothes and I will travel. I look forward to the memories I will make in the clothes I love. And I look forward to sharing the memories with those who also love.
