STYLE GURU STYLE: “I Don't Pop Molly, I Rock Tom Ford”

Much unlike Jay-Z, my college budget doesn’t exactly allow me to rock Tom Ford very frequently…or ever, for that matter. However, that doesn’t mean I can’t take a little inspiration from the world renowned fashion designer who managed to turn Gucci into a fashion powerhouse with his velvet hipsters, metallic boots and skinny satin shirts. Seems like a little bit of a throwback to the ’90s, but hey, you never know what could make a comeback in the fashion world!

Despite all of his crazy fabric combinations and the need to add a little bit of denim anywhere it will fit, his most recent 2015 ready-to-wear show featured knee-high leather boots and necklines up to your chin; he gave me a little bit of confidence to try something new and more “out there.” A common trend I noticed in many of his looks is his use of overcoats that are adorned with his interpretation of an animal print. Now, I’m not a huge fan of animal prints or fur for that matter, but after finding a vest, I decided to give it a whirl.

Taking a staple that is so bold and a little more out there, I wanted to keep the rest of my outfit fairly basic and with spring around the corner, there was not a chance you could get me into a full on fur coat. Not. A. Chance. So I opted for the vest. It was a little more out there and not typically what I would wear. Being in the spirit of spring, I wanted to brighten things up a bit with some classic white skinnies and I went with some color with a pair of cobalt wedges. To mimic Ford’s use of higher necklines and chunky necklaces, I managed to find a use for a longer sleeve turtleneck I bought months ago. I know, the word “turtleneck” itself makes you cringe so how on earth can it get any better after adding a fur vest? I had no idea how, when or where to wear it prior to see this season’s collection, but this was the perfect excuse to give it a try!

So we may not all be like Jay-Z and be able to boast about rocking Tom Ford any day of the week. But, you can always count on him for a little bit of crazy, a whole lot of creativity and even more inspiration. Take a look and I guarantee you’ll find something you can easily translate into your street style!
