STYLE GURU STYLE: It's A Plaid, Plaid World

With midterms under our belt and workloads heavy as we head towards the holiday homestretch, it can be hard not to fall into a slump. Now is the perfect time for a pick-me-up: you can easily switch up your wardrobe and add a little fun into your outfits! Incorporate a bold pattern and modern accessories to make any classic look 2015 ready and put a little prep in your step too.

Deriving my style inspiration from kate spade New York’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection, I was mesmerized by the pops of plaid in many of her looks. I fell in love with the outfit featured as number 11 because of its bright color scheme and chic accessories. For me, a more practical version of this look includes fitted chino pants. My maroon pair is wearable, but trendy.

To balance the boldness of the pants, I picked a lightweight sweater, ideal for layering in chillier weather or working solo on a crisp, sunny day. By keeping my top simple, I had room to play with shapes and color in my accents. One of my favorite color combos this season is black and blue. It may seem a little nontraditional, but when worn in small amounts, it can add an edgy vibe to an otherwise tailored look.

Besides color, I wanted to keep the geometric vibe from the pants going through my accessories too (after all, plaid is RAD). My Steve Madden bag has defined, rigid lines, reflecting the plaid, whereas my rings are more diverse in shape. To add a little texture to this outfit and make it more dressy, I chose a pair of felt flats with a whimsical shape, mimicking kate spade’s runway look.

This look will make a casual day in the office, a class presentation and the holiday season more exciting. Don’t be afraid to commit to a bold pattern; just remember, less is more!

Get My Look: 1. Plaid pants. 2. Any textured flats. 3. Geometric ring.
