STYLE GURU STYLE: Keeping It Tight In Black And White

To me, the colors black and white signify class, sophistication and power. The bold combination of these two colors was just one of the reasons I was captivated by Neil Barrett’s fall 2014 ready-to-wear collection. By layering monochromatic tops with a blazer, peacoat or leather jacket, the look is simple yet elegant. These layers are not gender specific, which is a key element Neil Barrett likes to utilize in his collections. The use of black bottoms alongside black tops makes the outfit sharp and edgy, which was Barrett’s goal in creating his pieces.

I picked out the parts of this look I admired the most and tried it out for myself. First off, I knew I wanted to layer with an oversized black blazer. This plays into Barrett’s use of unisex items as well as his black color scheme. This is one of my favorite blazers because the cuffs have a tiny zigzag pattern that spices it up a bit. I opted for a V-neck for under the blazer to give the pinch of white accent that Barrett showcased. Black bottoms were a must so my favorite pair of black high-waisted jeans did just the trick.

I had to add my own flare to the outfit a bit so I made sure I picked the perfect accessories. My flower statement necklace is always a fun add-on for monochromatic outfits. As for shoes, my black heels matched well with the outfit and completed the look as a whole.

Neil Barrett has done it again and created a classy and awesome look. From blazers to black and white items I’ll be sure to keep incorporating these elements into my wardrobe in 2015.
