Don’t get me wrong, leather is the embodiment of cool. As a self-proclaimed rebel, I own a well-crafted black leather motorcycle jacket from ASOS that is certainly stylish and worthy of a future article. The only problem I currently have with it, and most leather jackets I have observed, is that they tend to look over the top in a college class setting. What would a rebel be doing in a 9:00 a.m. lecture hall for business finance anyway? When looking for a jacket for this fall season, I knew that I wanted to retain the leather jacket cut, while not compromising a drop in aesthetic that comes with a well-made leather jacket. My favorite designer, Todd Snyder, has the solution. Todd Snyder’s spring 2016 line featured several bomber jackets in his popular monochromatic looks of gray and blue. His color scales give testament to how much of a difference pocket placement and zipper closures make. I often will only use one or two colors in an outfit because I tend to buy garments, like Snyder’s, which complement each other but do no not run together. For brisk mornings and cool evenings, a lightweight jacket can be your best friend. Snyder also collaborates with shoe brand, PF Flyers, and is featured in my look as well.
The linen fabric on my jacket holds a crisp appearance and is in versatile heather gray. Because they can be worn with shirts with personality, I typically purchase all my semi-casual jackets in “blazer colors” such as: light gray, charcoal, navy and cream. Consequently, I would have no reservations about wearing this jacket with a white shirt and slim black tie. Where as leather jackets tend to require you to match it to your shoes, this is more forgiving to experimentation. A small detail I learned from Todd Snyder that I usually add when wearing this jacket casually is a slight turn up of the cuff. You can also use this trick with denim jackets in order to better reveal your watch or bracelets that can often become hidden by this layering.
Some of the accessories to the jacket I wish to bring attention to are the monochromatic white PF Flyers, chambray shirt, light wash jeans and vintage watch. For those that are unimpressed by the craftsmanship of Converse, I highly recommend these high-tops as an alternative on the same price point. The chambray shirt is a staple in my wardrobe and can be layered with most sweaters and jackets while pairing with everything from jeans to light chinos. Light-washed jeans are definitely rising in popularity as ’90s style is finally becoming nostalgic. I tend to be drawn towards nostalgic style, which is why when I bought my first watch, I went for this Vintage 1950s era Omega Seamaster Automatic. Being that this watch is waterproof and has lasted close to 60 years without a servicing or need for a battery, I would say that paying $300 dollars for a luxury brand watch like this is not a bad investment for a soon to be graduate!
