STYLE GURU STYLE: Little Black Dress

The little black dress has been and will always be a woman’s wardrobe staple. Since the time when Audrey Hepburn in the world-famous black dress by Hubert de Givenchy stole people’s heart in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the little black dress has been brought into Vogue and held a sacred position in fashion history. Women in black, which used to be a symbol of dangerous women back in the 19th century, has become the prototype of elegance. Stylists’ enthusiasm for the little black dress never fades away. Its sophistication, mystery and versatility make it the eternal fashion icon.

Black has always been my favorite color and it tells the most about me. About half of my wardrobe is occupied by dark shadows of black, and I never feel sorry about that. Black might be the only color that disobeys the rule of “the less is more.” If I pick a color that stands for me, it must be black.

So in this look, I make the most of black and lighten up with burgundy and azure. This black dress is perfect for the season. When the temperature drops, just add a pair of silky sheer tights to keep you warm and chic. I chose this black leather jacket to be consistent with the dress and create a sharp look with a bit coolness. While a leather jacket usually conveys a sense of wildness, my floppy hat balances it with a splash of elegance and implicitness. My choice for the handbag shows my intention for embellishing the overall darkness with some simple brightness. This azure satchel from kate spade keeps up with its classic cute style with the square shape that enriches the sharpness. Keeping the three color rule as one of my principles for styling, I save the one last color spot for this pair of burgundy block heels. I started falling in love with this vibrant color since it basically took over all the stages during the fall season. These open-toe suede heels have been the eye-catcher every time when I wear them. My attempt of putting black, azure and burgundy together actually surprises me for making this look visually comfortable and attractive.

My passion for black has only grown, and my creativity for styling black outfit drives me further for expanding my wardrobe in black. For people who are afraid of the heaviness of a black outfit, a simple tip is to embellish it with a burst of color—but not too much! You never want to steal the thunder of black.
