A.P.C. has always been one of my go-to brands for style inspiration. They seamlessly incorporate denim, menswear, heritage and minimalism all in one aesthetic. I mean, what could you not love about that? Their look is what I’m all about—taking inspiration from multiple avenues to create your own, unique style. A.P.C’s spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection inspired me to put my style mixing to the test, and below are my three takeaways (and, yes, I’m already thinking about spring because it’s always sunny in Philadelphia).
White or cream denim is a closet must-have. These classic shades are easy to mix with blue denim pieces that aren’t pants, like a denim jacket. I always struggle with when and how to wear denim jackets, but pairing one with cream jeans is an easy way to upgrade the whole denim on denim thing that’s still going on (as seen in A.P.C.’s lookbook).
Sometimes men’s T-shirts can be chic, such as the Coach X Gary Baseman T-shirt I’m wearing here. I find that women’s graphic T-shirts usually hug my curves the wrong way. I prefer the loose, boxy fit of men’s T-shirts, and they give off a more calm and collected vibe when paired with tighter pants. I love the way A.P.C. mixes boxier fits with more tailored ones in their casual looks—there’s nothing chicer than a girl that can pull off a men’s shirt!
Always add your own flair. A denim jacket is a necessary piece to have in any closet (men’s or women’s), but sometimes a basic blue one can get boring. Try sewing a statement patch on the back of yours to make it one-of-a-kind. Patches made from interesting materials, such as leather and fur instantly add luxe appeal and make your jacket seem way more expensive than it actually is. I cut the panel on my jacket from a vintage thrift store sweater, and my expert sewer of a roommate went to work adding it to the back of my Levi’s jacket! It’s a cheap way to liven up an old favorite.
Now it’s your turn to combine your favorite styles into one look. Happy style mixing, Fashionistas/os!
