STYLE GURU STYLE: Mixing Prints

There are two big things I struggle with when it comes to my style. The first is dressing cute when it’s nearly zero degrees out. I always end up wearing a oversized sweater, leggings and a pair of snow boots. Here in Chicago, like I’ve said before, the weather is extremely unpredictable. Right now, it’s freezing and snowing on and off throughout the week.

The second big thing I struggle with is stepping out of my comfort zone in regards to colors and prints. This outfit, as monochromatic and simple as it seems, was a big step for me! I took a big risk pairing plaid with stripes, despite the outcome of it looking somewhat simple and matchy-matchy.

I got inspired by Versace’s spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection. The collection has a huge variety of mixed prints in much more vibrant colors than the ones in my outfit, but I’m taking baby steps, people!

One key thing to factor into your outfits is layering. If I were to be traveling downtown in this outfit and not to class, I would definitely switch out a long sleeve shirt for a heavy sweater. I would also wear a hat, despite my hate for hat hair. I would also probably substitute my Chelsea boots for my winter boots or over-the-knee boots with a pair (or two) of socks.

At the end of the day, it’s important to dress yourself appropriately so you don’t get frostbite, but that doesn’t mean you have to completely eliminate your personal style.
