STYLE GURU STYLE: Not Just A Hand-Me-Down

Sometimes the best outfits in life are right in front of us. As the youngest out of my cousins, I received a lot of their clothes that they grew out of. They would give me anything that they couldn’t fit in anymore. I got those iconic hand-me-downs of high waisted shorts, denim overalls, spaghetti strap tank tops and decorated flare jeans.

Once I got to college my mom started to give me her clothes too! The hand-me-downs she gives me tend to have a unique pattern or detailed sequins purchased in the late ’80s and ’90s from boutique shops and department stores. The necklines are usually much different than what we see in stores right now too. The necklines are much wider like a scoop neck or they’d cover the neck a lot like a turtleneck tank top. She also gives me jumpsuits that are halter necklines with flared legs. The patterns on the jumpsuits were either black, purple or a bright repeated flower print.

Out of the pieces she’s given me so far I would have to say my favorite piece is one that’s more casual. It’s a Crericci 100 percent acrylic oversized cardigan. This cardigan always makes me feel confident and relaxed. It has variations of pink, purple, yellow, and green. It only has two buttons, two giant pockets and is very loose fitting. I usually pair it with dark hues. In this case I wore black skinny jeans, a fitted navy tee and black booties.

Wearing this cardigan is comfortable and honestly always makes me feel right at home. I say don’t ever underestimate your hand-me-downs. Take the opportunity to recreate these pieces with what you have in your closet and you’re good to go!
