Plain jackets, step aside. A new trend is making its way into the hearts of every Fashionista. The cape or “blanket wrap” has become a new look that designers are trying to make their own. The cape was an old look but has come back to style in a new, refreshing way.
Lindsey Thornburg takes on this challenge in her fall ready-to-wear 2014 collection and has come out on top, making her jackets the center of her inspiration. Each jacket has its own unique bold pattern and shape, which contrasts with the neutral, yet detailed, under outfit. She plays with layers and patterns in the clothes underneath the jackets to add more texture to the whole look without drawing the eye away from the cape.
I like to try new styles. My typical outfit is a more neutral look with one piece that is making a statement. Whether it be cool hats, funky boot, a vintage necklace or some new style, I am always the first one to say, “Hey, it wouldn’t hurt to try.” Thornburg reflects my style, though she has turned it up a notch—something I wish to strive for in my look.
I would do almost anything to get my hands on one of Thornburg’s coats. But since that wouldn’t happen even in my wildest dreams, I thought I would play a little with the structure of her look to create a look of my own. And just like Thornburg, my jacket was not going to be any ordinary jacket.
A little while ago I picked up a cape with a fun pattern on it. This is one of my favorite pieces, and is super comfortable to wear. It is so unique and adds texture to any look. Underneath, I wanted to stick to a simple outfit to draw attention to the coat. It is important, when picking out an outfit to go underneath, that you don’t overpower your coat. Too many bright colors would drag attention away from the coat. I stuck with a black dress, tights and knee-high boots to create the simple look. I cannot wait to find more bold pieces like this, and I wonder what the next big move for fashion will be.
Get My Look: 1. A fun coat. 2. An all black ensemble. 3. Some killer boots.
