New York City and Los Angeles: both cities are fashion capitals of the world, yet channel distinct styles and vibes. NYC is modern, sleek and chic with monochromatic tones while LA is relaxed, boho and glamorous with splashes of color. I adore the two cities (maybe favoring LA, my home, a little more) and was inspired to combine the contrasting aesthetics.
Taking inspiration from a specific look from the the Alexander McQueen spring 2016 ready-to-wear Collection, I imitated the opened blouse look and translated it to an everyday outfit. The white color directs the attention to the top and creates a lasting impact on the viewer’s mind. The elegant, structured coat juxtaposed against the loose trousers is where I see the intersection of the New York and California style.
To emulate this look and fashion an outfit representing both cities, I pulled elements from the runway and characteristics of the fashion capitals. The color scheme of black and white was borrowed from NYC as well as the clothing silhouettes. However, I kept the accessories such as the conch hat, lace-up, cut-out shoes and mini cross-body to allude to LA style. In further detail, I paired the crisp white blouse, the focal point, with loose-fitting, lace-trimmed shorts along with a black crop top. For an unexpected element, I tied a navy bandana on my purse.
NYC and LA have distinct fashion personalities. However, when the two styles are paired together, they can create an euphoric and unique look that appeals to both aesthetics.
