STYLE GURU STYLE: Pattern Play

There are some days (more often than not) when nothing in your closet makes sense. Pieces that were purchased five years ago or even two days ago suddenly seem pointless, confusing and impossible to put together. For the average college student, these struggles only become more real. Add in morning classes, the sad but realistic budget and the essential comfort element, and the bountiful options that started at the mall start to close in on you.

Enter the M Missoni resort 2016 collection, which is an amalgam of oversized patterned shirtdresses paired with Western-inspired cowboy boots. Each piece has plenty to say on its own; they signify the designer’s intent to merge two ideas into one look. Speaking as someone who can barely make sense of her own pieces, the collection spoke to me.

What I loved most is that the collection revealed an opportunity to expand beyond the “one statement piece maximum” rule. Missoni demonstrates how a number of bold pieces can be integrated into a look and still look elegant. Tactics to keep in mind in order to achieve this style are to keep with a cohesive color scheme, take advantage of your accessories and utilize color-blocking.

For my interpretation, I chose some of the more daring pieces in my closet. Typically, my comfort zone would be to wear this dress with a pair of Converse or ballet flats. Channeling my inner Missoni however, I decided to keep with the blue color scheme and take out a new pair of shoes. The blue flower detail remains cohesive, and the gold adds a nice pop of color. By the end, I had a perfect look to go out in that merged together two of my favorite statement pieces.

Get My Look: 1. Patterned boat neck dress. 2. Fun booties. 3. Finish it off with a hint of lipstick.
