Do you remember the last time you wore overalls? Those one-piece outfits were the epitome of tomgirl swag and represented the true nature of being rough and tough. What I once thought was an unflattering outfit, became a challenge I wanted to try to pull off effortlessly. Although it took me a while to warm up to the mental image of me in an adult onesie, I never turn down a challenge.
I remember my epiphany moment came when my favorite rapper, I use favorite loosely it changes by the day, started marketing for his album Chance 3 and debuted his most iconic look yet…overalls! At first, the branding was far-fetched, a young independent rapper wearing matching overalls and baseball caps to every engagement he booked. However, it did not take long before I realized the aesthetic he was going for. At one point in every musician’s career, there is a period where their fans and supporters can pinpoint that one era of good music and the accolades that come with it. From Beyoncé’s blonde hair, to Rihanna’s red wings during her Loud era in 2010, it’s too hard to forget. So of course, Chance the Rapper would want to create a memorable era with his signature “3” caps and the overalls attached. This was the beginning of his mainstream success, and I was down for the cause.
Since my style fluctuates depending on my mood, for this black overall look I wanted to stay on the sporty side. Since the legs are supposed to be straight, rather than skinny I went a size down for the look I initially wanted. I then decided to pair it with a cool toned long sleeve to compliment, but also pop against the black. Lastly, I finished the outfit off with my Superstars and a black choker, the only permanent piece in any outfit I wear and voila!
Initially I was super intimidated to wear them, but at the end of the day it’s always important to remember that you dress for yourself and as long as you’re happy nothing else matters.
