The recent spring ready-to-wear collection by A.L.C. blew me away. Although Andrea Lieberman is best known for contemporary American sportswear, she decided to design a collection inspired by Italian cinema of the ’60s. Basically, this collection was everything I could have ever wanted. The feminine designs showcased playful colors and prints, flounced out skirts and minimal jewelry. The dresses were what especially caught my eye, with beautiful high necklines and low, interesting backs. It seemed like the entire focus was on one piece: the dress. The outfit could be retro, but still modern in its simplicity, and I loved that.
For this look I emulated the retro aesthetic of the runway collection with a polka-dot, deep blue skater dress. The retro high neckline paired beautifully with the interesting, low-cut back, which added a modern feel to the look. Since the A.L.C. show refrained from too many accessories, I reigned my own impulse to throw on all the bracelets, necklaces and rings that I adore so much. Instead, I wore a simple black and gold ring on my left hand and a bronzed star ear cuff. Since the print and color of the dress were more subdued, I decided to add on a bright pink headband. For shoes, I wore a pair of black flats with a criss-cross design on the top.
This spring 2015 show is the perfect example of simple elegance. My first instinct is often to wonder whether an outfit is too simple or boring, but this collection shows that simple does not mean boring. The result of minimal pieces and accessories? A perfectly retro, yet modern look.
