Hasta la vista, lightweight maxis, denim shorts and summer dresses! Stashing away my summer pieces is my favorite way to welcome the change in seasons. While it isn’t cold enough to layer up just yet, I have introduced a few transition pieces into my wardrobe, including a velvet skirt. This fall is all about velvet, and I couldn’t be more excited, (or cozier).
Velvet is the ultimate fabric for looking on-trend, while being secretly comfortable. It has been seen on and off the runway in blouses, jackets, skirts and even shoes. The color of the fabric plays a huge role into the style it exhibits, as a baby pink velvet can appear soft and girly, while a crimson velvet will traditionally come off as sultry. Keep an eye out for crushed velvet as it’s also making a comeback, adding an additional layer of texture to an already unexpected fabric. Labels like Haider Ackermann, Ganni and River Island have all taken a liking to the trend, as shown by their extensive use of the fabric on the runway.
Taking inspiration from Valentino’s fall 2016 eye-catching velvet number, I combined a fun velvet piece with some basic pieces. Valentino’s lemon turtleneck dress was striking, but I decided to play with pattern, rather than color. The Zara skirt I’m wearing in this outfit is a fun, large floral pattern. I decided to pair this luscious fabric with a plain black scoop neck top to make the piece the center of attention. Additionally, the light cotton T-shirt counterbalances the heavy appearance that velvet can convey and makes for a harmonious pair.
I went for a vintage-inspired look because the floral velvet reminded me of the cool girl version of the fabric on my grandmother’s couch. To further achieve a vintage look, I adorned my wrist with a bronze monogram bracelet that has a little penny charm on it. I also added a marquise cut ring, which nods to King Louis XIV of France (you can’t get more vintage than the 1700s, can you). I swiped Maybelline’s Red Revival on my lips, and topped things off with a timeless pair of Ray-Bans.
