Vogue’s Chief Critic, Sarah Mower, reported on the Miu Miu fall 2016 ready-to-wear collection earlier this March. In her interview, she asked Miu Miu designer, Miuccia Prada, what the brand was all about. Prada hilariously described the Miu Miu style as, “Dressing with what’s left. Nobility and misery!” Ah, truer words have never been spoken when gazing with tear-filled eyes at a beautifully contrived, jam-packed wardrobe with alas, nothing to wear! Inspired by this collection, I have a solution my friends.
Regarding the design of her most recent collection, Prada “wanted it to be fun.” What’s more fun than wearing an article of clothing exactly how you did not intend to when you first bought it? Though this concept was not exhibited in the collection, the idea came to me when I was barreling through my closet and I noticed the curious pattern on one of my skirts that reminded me of the different patterns used in the collection.
The Miu Miu collection is filled with multiple forms of denim, vintage patterns and roomy tops all layered and worn together in unique ways I truly had never seen before. After witnessing this stylish merriment, I decided to perform my own little experiment: wearing a skirt as a shirt. I can now wholeheartedly say that science is real people, and it works.
One of the first things I noticed about the skirt I chose and from the Miu Miu collection all together, was the interesting use of pattern. A lot of the looks mixed both pattern and denim in creative ways. In my outfit-translation of the collection, I combined the subtle pattern on my skirt-shirt with a ripped denim pant and found that the two complimented each other nicely in a casual and carefree way.
The skirt as a shirt was comfortable, fun and different. I had a brand new top to sport around that came from my own closet, hidden in something I’ve had for years. Try it. You’ll like it, I promise.
