STYLE GURU STYLE: Slipping Into Suede

What is trendy, but not over the top? Retro, but not old? What is a piece you need to have as a closet staple that is so versatile that it can work from fall to late summer seasons and still be looking like all the celebs? This item checks all the boxes of those retro trends we’re all about, yet it’s been out there since at least the ’70s. Yep, you guessed it. We’re talking trench coats, but not just any trench coats, this year the style gods have picked a star child: the suede trench coat.

This last year, suede ruled the trend-scene and everyone still loves all the revamped looks from the ’70s. In the ’70s, trendsetters rocked the suede trench with knee-high, chunky-heeled boots and turtleneck sweaters. Back then it had a journalist on the weekend vibe, meets a music guru and va-va-voom that was her go-to look. In today’s day and age we have become more posh with more refined cuts and better designs. There are so many suede coat options from double breasted to fitted, or even draped and slouchy. 2016 made sure that all the suede coats have one thing in common, they are brown: nude, taupe, hazelnut, camel, light and dark. Take your pick, you really can’t go wrong and I mean hello, NUDES ARE IN!

I went for a thin suede coat option so it can be an oversized look without being too heavy. In the fall and winter I am all about the layered appearance, but I don’t like to give up my figure so you have to play around with your body proportions. I paired a white graphic T-shirt with some distressed light wash jeans and leather marble choker. Offsetting the outfit with darker colors, I went for leather pointed boots, a studded black belt and my clubmaster sunglasses.

The suede trench coat can be rocked in all different ways, but one of my all-time favorites is with an all-black outfit. Mixing and matching neutrals or prints can evaluate your look and by adding your own personal twist is what makes it unique. I am crushing over turtle necks and adidas Superstars, which would make for the perfect sporty luxe outfit (very 2016). So here is to the coat and all the ’70s lovers out there. Ditch your old trench coat for the next few months and slip into something all the Fashionistas are raving about.
