People always ask me if it was a hard change moving from California to New York. I always respond that the hardest thing was the big shock that came with learning how thin my sweaters actually were. Surprise, surprise! Winter has a whole other meaning in New York. Since moving to the city, I have fallen in love with coats. Long coats, bulky coats, patterned coats—you name it. They have all found a home in my closet, right where all my old so-called “sweaters” used to be. Luckily for me, statement coats flooded the runways this season.
While most of my wardrobe has become more and more black over the years, I still love a pop of color every now and then. As I passed the flea market outside my school one day, I could not pass up this hot pink wool coat. The coat looked like it could fit right in with the DKNY fall 2015 collection. I paired it with a simple black turtleneck dress resembling one from alice + olivia fall 2015 ready-to-wear. Then, I added some tights, like in the Diane von Furstenberg fall 2015 runway show, and some combat boots to make it more me.
Since the color of the coat was so fun and such a statement, I decided to add some statement jewelry too. My silver flying horses necklace looks bold against the black dress. Along with this, I added my favorite earrings. The colors in these glass earrings go perfectly with this hot pink coat. As a final touch, I threw on my vintage velvet purse and dragged some hot pink lipstick across my lips. Looking at this outfit, I felt a little less guilty about the amount of black in my closet…a little.
