Last week, New York Fashion Week debuted with Riccardo Tisci’s collaboration with artist Maria Abramovic for Givenchy, a romantic and sensuous show at Pier 26 that served as a meditation on 9/11. Perhaps less sensational, but equally significant was Alexander Wang’s show, the presentation of his 10th anniversary collection. In the past decade, Wang has transformed himself into one of the most influential designers in the world, but he has always kept his finger on the pulse of New York street style, with his collections constantly embodying the grunge-chic of downtown Manhattan. This season was no exception—with sheer mesh tops over sporty bralettes, bombers jackets and distressed denim, Wang’s spring/summer 2016 collection had an effortless and athletic feel.
I’ve always wanted to transplant New York vibes onto the Penn campus and fashion is the easiest way to do so. Eschewing the preppy blazers and sailing shoes that are a dime a dozen across the school, I selected street style-friendly pieces that were decidedly more urban than collegiate, that were easy to run around campus in but maintained a “different” aesthetic. While this gray knit dress from Australian label Cotton On may have quite a formal length, the versatile fabric and the sporty neckline give the dress a casual ease. Following the resurgence of basic sneakers (aka Adidas) on style influencers worldwide, I selected this pair of Adidas Originals kicks in white suede, a luxe take on the stripped down sneaker. To round off my ensemble, I complemented it by dressing it up with a Zara leather jacket (tied around the waist fashion blogger-style) and a metal cuff from COS, simple additions that give me the straight-off-the-streets style.
