Styles reminiscent of the 1970s took the spotlight in many of the spring 2015 fashion shows. ’70s trends were especially notable in the Chloé and MM6 Maison Margiela ready-to-wear collections. This week’s look is largely inspired by the MM6 Maison Margiela collection, which combined Americana details with Japanese silhouettes. The collection featured loose blouses, wide-legged pants, suede fringe outerwear and light-wash denim, which were all closet staples of the ’70s Fashionista/o.
This week, it has been considerably warm in Chicago. I took advantage of the beautiful weather, threw on some shorts and sandals and headed outside to enjoy the sunshine. Comfort, style and versatility are all key elements I consider when choosing my summer outfits. I tucked in a white keyhole blouse with my current favorite chambray drawstring shorts. The relaxed silhouette of this pairing mimics that of the MM6 collection. The blouse’s dressier feel can take this look from day to night. I slung on a light-wash collarless denim jacket for added texture and layer, in case it gets colder. Finally, I slipped on a pair of braided leather sandals. Braided details were ubiquitous in the ’70s, whether it be found on sandals, bags, vests or hats.
Summer is the perfect season to adopt and experiment with the bohemian styles of the 1970s. Whether you’re gallivanting in the city, dining outdoors, attending a music festival or going on a road trip, the decade’s flouncy blouses, airy bottoms and assortment of textures are sure to keep you comfortable and stylish.
