Kids today may not remember when Beanie Babies were sold out or that leggings used to have stirrups on the bottom of them, but they are catching on to some of our nostalgic ’90s trends. However, this trend has enabled me to relive my childhood days and bring out my inner kid. Not much has changed since then, since my love of fashion is still prominent in my life.
I first noticed this trend on the runway. Some of my favorite models have been sporting the choker, an accessory I thought was the “bomb diggity” in middle school. I was slightly in denial that the ’90s trend has been coming back until I saw some girls on campus sporting them on a daily basis. This time, instead of the rainbow colored tattoo choker we all got from Claire’s, the choker has been upgraded and more sophisticated. It represents a metamorphosis from our youth and how we have grown into elegant women. Gone are the days of the goth phase or the “I hate the world” rebellious attitude and here are the days where we can confidently dress ourselves to portray our joyous outlook on life. If anything, at least we can look back at our old webcam selfies and say we were the originators of this trend. I really enjoy this piece because of the nostalgic memory, one that young teens today will not understand.
The outfit I am wearing is an homage to the ’90s with a modern twist. While the choker was the main focal point of this look, my romper and shoes held their own ’90s qualities. The shoes I am wearing were my idea of the 2016 Doc Martens. The little peep toe it features gives it a little sense of rebellion, flashing a little bit of scandalous toe cleavage. The modern features are the cut-out on the heel; cut-outs are everywhere these days.
Moving on to the structure of this look, the romper. This particular romper I found in a boutique near my campus when out shopping with some friends. It encompasses the concept of the babydoll, another trend I adored as a young adult. It also has a spaghetti strap that trails down to a lower back.
And finally, the centerpiece of the look: the choker. I chose a delicate, lace choker to finish off this look because of how simple, yet complex it is. The lace detailing and scalloped edges polish off this accessory with a sophisticated edge.
The ’90s are back, giving us rationalization to not cringe as much when looking back at our old webcam photos. However, this trend has grown up just like we have, turning from rebellious to posh. Even though we are now all grown up and tending to various responsibilities, the revival of the choker necklace is telling us that maybe, every once in awhile, it is alright to be a kid again.
