The Ermanno Scervino fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection featured a number of houndstooth prints. This menswear pattern has cemented itself as timeless, ever since it was made popular for women by Chanel over 50 years ago. While we tend to focus on coats as our main houndstooth piece, this collection also featured dresses and skirts in the black and white print. Not only that, but the items were paired together. Layering the same or similar patterns in this way is something I never would have previously considered doing, for fear of the outfit being too noisy or repetitive. Those houndstooth and plaid two-pieces circa Clueless certainly spring to mind here! Nonetheless, it worked so well in this collection that I became inspired to try it out for myself.
In this outfit, the standout is, of course, the staple, iconic black and white houndstooth coat. However, because a girl can only own so many houndstooth pieces, I decided to mix it with a skirt with a different black and white pattern—a Silence & Noise A-line skirt from Urban Outfitters. The white blouse also had an element of colorblocking, with a black collar and sleeve edges. Keeping with the classic, polished look, I opted for a pair of black Mary Jane heels and added a little extra (and necessary!) height.
While houndstooth pieces are typically worn with block colors, fashion definitely isn’t about playing it safe. For this reason, I encourage you all to mix and match when it comes to this trend!
