WHAT TO WEAR: Cold Weather

In the 2014 article on The Huffington Post blog “What Little Girls Wish Daddies Knew,” Tara Hedman captured 25 insightful snippets of information that fathers should take to heart. The one word that came to mind after I read this was “poignant.” This is a truly poignant piece in which Hedman captures observances and brings them into words—words that I was unable to write for myself, but, nonetheless, agree with wholeheartedly.

For example, #13 reads: “Teach me a love of art, science, and nature, and I will learn that intellect matters more than dress size” or #21: “How you treat our dog when you think I’m not watching tells me more about you than does just about anything else.” As cliché as this may sound, I am definitely a Daddy’s girl. This has lent a hand in shaping my wardrobe over the years. From helping me realize that less is more in most situations to the discovery of my love for scavenging through the menswear section in thrift stores, my Daddy is—to say the least—a vital part of my life.

This is what drew me to this Fashionista’s sweater, which happens to be a staple from her father’s wardrobe. An oversized sweater like this channels the ’90s (think Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Seinfeld’s Elaine Benis), but it will also keep you warm during treks through midtown or to early morning classes. It may be 8:30am with weather in the teens, but that Egyptian art history course will soon be calling your name.

For optimal warmth, pair the oversized sweater of your choice with a pair of your favorite boyfriend jeans. These will provide more comfort than a pair of trousers but also offer more coverage than a simple pair of leggings. A pair of Converse will add to the casual vibe of the outfit, plus you can get away with practically any color when you wear the right sweater. Channeling the ’90s never appeared so chic.

One Simple Change: Replace those Converse for a pair of chunky heels—just cuff up the ends of your jeans for a more cohesive look that you can wear to an evening out. Va va voom!
