Whenever fall semester rolls around and campus is flooded by new students eager to sign up for every student organization that gives them a free T-shirt at the student activities fair, there is only one thing on my mind: sorority recruitment. I remember being a potential new member (PNM) going through the recruitment process like it was yesterday. Between worrying if the girls were actually going to like me and how I was going to afford a sorority or make time for it in my busy schedule, my biggest worry of all made the recruitment process even more stressful than it needed to be: WHAT. TO. WEAR. I remember ripping every article of clothing out of my dorm room wardrobe, searching “Sorority girls” and “How to dress for sorority recruitment” on Pinterest and texting at least 20 photos to my best friends asking which outfit I should pick for each round. I wanted to put my best foot forward and everything in my closet just screamed “high school” to me.
Two years later, I am now acting as a Sorority Recruitment Counselor and helping PNMs, just as I was, going through the recruitment process. As I said in my previous article, I am super involved in Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) at Kent State and hold four leadership positions in the FSL community, two of which are executive positions. Through my time involved in Fraternity and Sorority Life I have learned to truly embrace myself, my passions and my values, which, in terms of fashion, means dressing to display my own unique style rather than “dressing to impress.” With that said, the best fashion advice I can give a PNM going through fall recruitment is to be yourself and be true to your own style. Your future sisters will love you regardless of if you decided to the wear white or black shoes.
However, for those of you reading who are still fretting over what to wear for each round of recruitment, have no fear. Today we are featuring a look from this Fashionista. She is sporting the perfect outfit for house tours, which is the second major round of recruitment and probably the most crucial. During this round, sororities invite you to visit their houses and most girls tend to find their “home” at this stage of the recruitment process so it is always important to put your best foot forward! Alex is wearing a powder blue off-the-shoulder dress with a pair of nude rhinestone sandals that show off her inner diva. Partnered with a dainty necklace and some silver bracelets from Alex & Ani, she is ready to rock sorority recruitment while remaining true to her style.
That’s all for now Fashionistas! Good luck to everyone going through recruitment this fall and always remember to be true to yourself, and you’ll find your home away from home! Until next time Fashionistas. Stay #RAD.
